Steve Benen:
On CBS’s “Face the Nation” yesterday, host Bob Schieffer asked Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) yesterday, “Do Republicans have any plans to do anything on the unemployment front or are you just going to let things take their course?” It seemed like a good question.
McConnell replied, “No, I — I think — what — what we’re doing is encouraging the president to — to quit doing what he’s doing.”
And what is it that President Obama has been doing? Oh yeah, cleaning up the George Bush-Republican mess:
Has President Obama been perfect? No. Nobody is. We'd be in better shape if we could have gotten a bigger stimulus. And we still need more investment from the federal government in a jobs plan. But that's going to require Republicans to do more than point fingers.
President Obama has started to turn the economy around, and even though we need to do more, the only thing we hear from Republicans is that they want to win the next election. I know it ain't going to happen, but wouldn't it be nice if they decided to do the right thing for a change?
