I recently helped the non-profit family group MomsRising.org collect stories by members who depend on the government-run healthcare program, Medicaid, to care for themselves, their elderly parents and/or disabled children. Here are the stories. Please leave comments in support.
Well, whenever we publish such powerful stories, we always get folks defending private insurance profits and CEO pay over a safety net for our families. I thought I would share with you the latest right-wing talking points regarding Medicaid. And yes, I am aware that these are well-coordinated and come from somewhere -- FOX News? -- as we'll get three people saying the exact same thing, like this:
If you collected all those taxes from big oil and corporate jets for the next 50 years, you still would not have offset the deficit spending that occurred just in the month of February 2011. -HCJ
Here's another one:
Almost half of the nation’s families pay no income tax. If there is shared sacrifice, it has to come from everyone in order to fix the deficits. -Chris
And as long as we ask the rich to pay their fair share while allowing almost 50% of our citizens to pay almost nothing in income tax, we will get nowhere but poorer. I am glad the generous tax payers of this country are affording you great healthcare. Just know that it comes from the sweat and hard work of taxpaying citizens. -Sue
I want to point out that Sue and Chris said this to a woman suffering from Spina Bifida and a host of other serious debilitating illnesses. Clearly, they have been blessed not to suffer from a debilitating illness or have to care for someone who does. No skin off their backs if Medicaid is cut as House Republicans have proposed.
Where have you heard these talking points? Have you responded?
