Breaking
Governor Brown’s office just issued a notice that he has signed SB 48, the FAIR Education Act. Brown has been under intense pressure this past week from both sides.
You can now ignore the rest of this diary.
Clarknt67 published a diary a few hours ago (before all but the non-coolest of us Californians had risen for the day) about SB 48, a bill which would require California's schools history textbooks to include discussion about the struggle for LGBT equality.
The bill passed both the California House and Senate, and of course the fundies are losing it over this ("OMG. Harvey Milk will be mentioned! The children! Think of the Children!"). Their consternation has apparently caused Governor Brown to remain undecided on whether he will sign the bill. He has to decide by Monday, and no one has a clue as to what he's thinking.
As Clarknt67 put it
Whether it's "Praying the Gays Away," re-institutionalizing the Federally mandated closet of DADT, or wiping us from history books, or opponents will stop at nothing to erase gay people from the American experience. Let's not let them win this one.
So now that California is up and capable of using a phone keypad, here's what to do (and if you're not Californian that's okay -- you can call too):
Call the Governor's office at 1-916-445-2841. Choose English (1) or Spanish (2), then press 2 to share your opinion on current legislation. Press 1 to say that you want to voice your opinion on SB 48. Then hit 1 again to say you support this bill. If the lines are busy, try again -- our opponents are jamming the lines.
