Paul Wellstone on grassroots leadership

http://youtu.be/...

Paul Wellstone:

... the Change in our Country comes from the grassroots, and the most important thing is that the People become their own Leaders -- Speak for themselves;  Advocate for themselves.  That's the best of Leadership Development.

First of all the way in which we make the Change, the way in which we have more Opportunities for People, more Justice in our Country;

The ways in which we get to the point where no Citizen views himself or herself as a Victim -- but rather as men and women with Rights, who live a Life with Dignity.

The way in which we get to a Country where every child feels as if they're a Treasure and their parents have Hope.  And we have hope, and we have vision, and we have learning.

And we have Dignity.  That's how we win.  That's how we win.

I think the Key to that is a Citizen's Politics that can beat the Big Money Politics.

The Key to that is to have people who are engaged in Public Affairs;  who are engaged in the Political process.   And who are willing to become the new Community Leaders -- the new Leaders in our County;

-- that's grassroots Leadership Development;  that has to come from the grassroots.

The mode of Change, the mode of Power for Change in our Country -- I'm a United States Senator, but it's not going to come from within the United States Senate, or within the House of Representatives, it's not going to come from within Washington.

-- the mode of Power for Change is going to be the External Pressure -- it's going to come from the grassroots.  And the way that happens -- is when We build Leaders.

Who speaks for what the American People really want?

to fight for what's Right?

to fight for the Hope and the Dignity our cherished American Dream?

Who will stand up ... and Speak for us now?

We need only,  look in the mirror ...

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

    •  The only real Plan to Cut the Deficit (14+ / 0-)

The only real Plan to Cut the Deficit ...  is the Progressive Budget Plan

      YES we have a Plan.

Here are the Key points of the Progressive Budget Plan, put together by the House Progressive Caucus:

      The House Progressive Budget
by Ezra Klein, Washingtonpost -- 4/25/2011

[...] the budget proposal released by the House Progressive Caucus:  Uses taxes. Mostly on the rich. [...]

The legislation would let most of the Bush Tax Cuts expire [...] and

add a few New Brackets for Millionaires and multimillionaires, [...]

a stronger and more progressive Estate Tax.

Capital Gains and dividend income would be taxed as normal income,

Corporate Taxes would be raised, and

a Financial Transaction Tax would be passed.

The Payroll Cap would be raised on the employee side and abolished on the employer side, taking care of most of Social Security’s shortfall, and

the Defense Department would see $1.8 Trillion in cuts over 10 years.

There’d be a Public Option added to the health-care system and

Medicare would get more power to negotiate Drug Prices.

THAT -- is How we fix the Faux Austerity Problem ...

assuming we have Champions of the People, willing to fight for it.

To fight for the WORKING People, from which their power stems.

  •  Stop waiting for politician "heroes" (6+ / 0-)

Perhaps there was an era where there were more than a handful of politicians that were concerned about anything but advancing their own careers and feathering their own nests.  I'm willing to concede that such a phenomenon may have occurred in the past, though I don't believe it.  What is undeniable is that today it is only the most "extreme, loony left" politician that gives damn one about anything other than their own careerism, which they understand to be best fostered by total obedience and subservience to the demands of the Wealthy Few.  The Ruling Class is no longer willing to share even the crumbs from the table, and the political class realizes that today its duty to the Ruling Class is to explain to we mere masses why we are no longer entitled to even the crumbs,  And it must be admitted the pols do that job quite well.  But to ask them, or expect them, to do or be anything but dutiful servants of Wealth is to expect the impossible.

We are on our own and have to start learning to think and act that way.

representatives.  When the deceive, lie, spread false "hope and "change"while representing something else very greedy, ugly and evil then what are we to do?  Letter writing no longer seems to cut it, not stern words.  Protests, unless you got 100,000,000 people going are marginalized and ignored by the MSM.

Wisconsin was a huge turnout, and a positive, kinda, so far.  Keep in mind it is still ongoing and mostly undecided with the Reich Wing poison being pumped in, still.  Also, it is mostly ignored by the MSM in the rest of the country and partly there, too.  Finally, the first real election for the Supreme court and Prosser stole it.  Good thing Obama's DOJ is on the case... oh wait, I'm being sarcastic.

So, where will this all lead?  What will we eventually do?  Must do if we are to reclaim our futures, our lives?

If you enjoy being the frog in the slow-boil then vote Obama, else maybe it's time to turn up the heat. The frog may just jump out and save itself ala Wisconsin!

Both in the primary and the general election. Bypass the picks of the MSM and political machinery completely.

At the moment Bernie Sander and Dennis Kucinich seem to be the two politician sticking their necks out.

Yes. it will probably not result in a win at the polls, but it will send a message.

  •  Another great diary jamess. (3+ / 0-)

These are all the great orators that spoke to the heart of the issues.  There are some people in Congress that are quieter, but also work for the people and aren't in the pockets of big corporations.  They don't get much credit, but they do the hard work.  I'm depressed but not yet ready to give up the fight as are many here at DK.  I still think Obama has great leadership within him, if we keep holding his feet to the fire and have his back.  Its only when we turn against ourselves that we lose to the opposition.  I'm sure Sun Tzu has a quote to support that thought.

...ultimately means running for office, and getting elected.

We need moar better Democrats, plain and simple.

That "leadership" will not magically appear, sent from heaven, nor do I see puported "left" oppositionalists pulling it out of their ass, with all their feigned outrage at the Party for what right wing majorities are doing to us.

Viable progressives have to step up and run, as Democrats, at the urging of those constituencies who feel poorly represented, and they have to be elected, by an electorate mobilized, for a change, to seize the power, democratically, electorally.

As long as the House and Senate are subject to right wing majorities, as they have been such day one of this administratiion, with all those Blue Dogs in there, the whole world is pretty much screwed, more or less.

This is ALL about relative right/left plurality in the House and Senate, and down the ladders of power, to the state and local levels.

Unless and until "left" oppositionalists call off their electoral boycott and splitting "strategies", and rally behind the Democrats, to crush the Republicans (and Blue Dogs), they will remain a negative drag on our prospects for justice and peace, to save the planet.

Which has to make you wonder, whose side are they really on?

If their "strategy" can only serve to usher in another round of right wing dictatorship, then WTF good are they, and why should we "tolerate" their trolling of dkos?

Who "needs" to be assailed with an "opinion" that we are all fools, the Prez is a traitor, and that we can't, and shouldn't even try to get more better Democrats elected?

    Fuck that noise.

It's exactly the same as right wing line, and thus must be considered an enemy attack, regardless of any purported "left" perspective.

Democracy is the most fundamental revolutionary principle. Information is the ultimate key.
