Via Naked Capitalism I found this article about Tim DeChristopher and the fact that our justice system favors the rich. I know, I know, you're shocked ! Below the fold I have some linkies about a call to action and some reminders as to why DeChristoper is a hero.
The word hero definitely applies to Tim DeChristopher. Here someone who listened to his conscience and did what he felt was necessary and morally correct to take on the carbon industry and bring attention to the absurdity that is our energy policy. His efforts may cost him a lengthy prison sentence, no thanks to judge who has been making things difficult for him.
Tim DeChristopher, aka Bidder # 70, as you may remember, decided to participate in a sale of public land to oil and gas companies in an effort to throw a wrench in the works. Many of the parcels in the auction were later withdrawn, by Secretary Salazar I might add, because they were illegal.
US energy policy is US oil and gas industry policy. Ever since the good old days when the vice president could meet with oil and gas company executives to get the administration's marching orders, the US policy has been to provide tax exemptions, evironmental exemptions and coddling. All for an industry that is dying, and is completely shameless in their desire to stop meaningful action on climate change and efforts to move us into a future of powered primarily by renewable energy.
Tim made a courageous stand which we should all support.
There is a call to action to protest at a federal courthouse near you, particularly in Salt Lake City.
Provide support in any way you can.
The sort of protest and civil disobedience which he demonstrated is something that a lot more of us are going to have to participate in if we want to change things. Really it's going to be required just to keep things from getting worse, never mind trying to improve the situation.
