More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

You can add a private note to this diary when hotlisting it:
Are you sure you want to remove this diary from your hotlist?
Are you sure you want to remove your recommendation? You can only recommend a diary once, so you will not be able to re-recommend it afterwards.
Rescue this diary, and add a note:
Are you sure you want to remove this diary from Rescue?
Choose where to republish this diary. The diary will be added to the queue for that group. Publish it from the queue to make it appear.

You must be a member of a group to use this feature.

Add a quick update to your diary without changing the diary itself:
Are you sure you want to remove this diary?
(The diary will be removed from the site and returned to your drafts for further editing.)
(The diary will be removed.)
Are you sure you want to save these changes to the published diary?

The country needs that new Tunnel for passenger rail under the Hudson built.

  •  Budget Cuts (0+ / 0-)

I think one of the challenges of reviewing the different plans that have been proposed to impact the annual federal deficit, currently at about $1.5 Trillion, is what determines a "cut". We have seen various plans by the leadership in both the House and the Senate and each of them have proposed "cuts" that are later scored by the CBO who often calculates different numbers. An interesting number that I have heard several times this week is that if we froze current federal spending at the F2011 level, which would result in no actual spending reductions (what most of us would think of as no "cuts"), the CBO would score that as high as a $9 Trillion "cut" over the next ten year. This number may not be accurate, but everyone seems to think that the number is $6-9 Trillion.  So as we see the different proposals for spending restraint it is important to note that the CBO scores these against a forecast that has assumptions for very substantial spending increases built into its model. This is understandable as many federal programs have eligibility criteria and a growing population of people who will qualify for benefits over time. The other point is that any spending agreements for F2014 and beyond can be changed in the next Congress, so the only budget "cuts" that really matter are those in the next few years which are controlled by the current 112th Congress.

I agree, it's a pipe dream and decades down the line, but the economic stimulus that a high speed line between either New York or Philadelphia and Chicago would be fantastic.

    •  Run it directly from New York ... (4+ / 0-)

... to a fairly straight run into Chicago ~ say, Fort Wayne, Indiana, and it runs roughly along the I-80 through Pennsylvania and through a lot of northern Ohio farmland.

And then with junctions with the proposed Ohio Hub and Midwest Hub, you have:

      New York City to:

      • Pittsburgh via Cleveland/Pitt
      • Columbus/Cincinnati via 3C
      • Cleveland / Toledo / Detroit via Pitt/Detroit

      Chicago to:

      • Toledo/Detroit via Columbus/Detroit
      • Cleveland via 3C
      • Pittsburgh via Cleveland/Pitt

IOW, establish a single Express HSR corridor, and a regional network of 125mph corridors, and you get far more out of that Express HSR corridor than just end to end trips.

  •  Improved Oregon rail service (6+ / 0-)

I'd like to see passenger summer rail service to the Oregon coast. I'm not picky. It could be Portland-to-Astoria, Portland-to-Tillamook, Albany-to-Toledo, or Eugene-to-Coos Bay. As an added bonus, I'd like the restoration of Amtrak Pioneer service.

  •  my dream (5+ / 0-)

A network of trains at TGV/ICE speeds so that I could board a train underneath Dulles Airport and go to Charlottesville--Greensboro--Atlanta or Union Station-Charleston--Savannah in less time than it takes these days to fly.  A web of electric HSR passenger rail routes so that even taking overnight trains could cover 1600 miles in 16 hour trips. The Steel Interstate corridors.  A doubling in size of the Washington Metro, and streetcar systems in addition through the region. The ability to fly to any major airport in America and take a fast train directly to downtown OR (as in Paris-CDG) to other destinations in the region. A rebuilt grand Pennsylvania Station in NYC to replace the masterpiece destroyed by thoughtless greed. Tearing down urban interstate highways like I-10 in New Orleans and rebuilding the urban fabric they destroyed, providing cities with silent electric streetcars. A nation with a transportation system in which cars play a much smaller role, somewhat as in the 1930s.

  •  Baltimore to Harrisburg. (3+ / 0-)

I would like to see a new line built from Cockeysville, just north of Baltimore, to the Harrisburg area. I think that the line that was closed after Hurricane Agnes in 1972 could have been rehabbed while traffic proved itself, but the old line is now a "Rails to Trails" park. We would have to build a new line before traffic could show its needed.

When they built the Monitor Merrimac Memorial Bridge Tunnel, we missed an opportunity to piggyback on that construction, a rail line connecting existing Amtrak serice in Newport News to Norfolk and Virginia Beach. We would have needed a transit line to take advantage of the tracks, as the new Amtrak and commuter passengers would not have been enough to justify the construction.
