Mitt Romney:
First, the White House has proposed cutting military spending by $400 billion over the next 12 years. Then, the president agreed to a budget process that could entail cutting defense spending by $850 billion. [...] Cuts of this magnitude can only be the produce of one of two different beliefs. On the one hand is the wishful thinking that the world is becoming a safe place. [...] On the other hand, that leaves us with the belief that America should become a lesser power.
Nice attack, Mitt. The only problem is that you accidentally attacked your own party.
First, in the Ryan Plan, Republicans proposed the exact same military spending level as the president. (See table S-4 of this document from Paul Ryan's budget committee.)
Second, it was Republicans who insisted on the spending process trigger, not President Obama. Yes, he agreed to their demand. But if Mitt Romney wants to blame someone, blame John Boehner. After all, Boehner says he got 98% of what he wanted out of the deal.
Maybe this is too much of a leap, but when you combine that with the fact Romney is attacking President Obama for agreeing with Republicans and while simultaneously planning to attack Rick Perry for wanting to eliminate Social Security and Medicare, it's maybe time to start asking the question: is Romney about to switch parties?
