Welcome! "What's Happenin'?" is a casual community diary (a daily series, 8:30 AM Eastern on weekdays, 10 AM on weekends and holidays) where you can hang out, talk about what is going on with you, listen to music, talk about the news and the goings on here and everywhere.
Maybe you have seen some news stories that you think are not receiving enough attention and you'd like to post links to them. Maybe you'd like to just chat among friends about your life, your health, your family or social circle, your pets, etc. You can also post links to your own writings here on dkos or elsewhere. Perhaps you want to share some pictures or music or links to other things. This is your kind of place to talk about what's happening.
Just about anything goes, but attacks and pie fights are not welcome here. If that is what you want, find another place to do it. This is a community diary and a friendly, peaceful, supportive place for people to interact. This diary series is produced by the TeamDFH group but anyone who wants to join in peaceful interaction is welcome.

Brass Spittoons
Langston Hughes
Clean the spittoons, boy.
Detroit,
Chicago,
Atlantic City,
Palm Beach.
Clean the spittoons.
The steam in hotel kitchens,
And the smoke in hotel lobbies,
And the slime in hotel spittoons:
Part of my life.
Hey, boy!
A nickel,
A dime,
A dollar,
Two dollars a day.
Hey, boy!
A nickel,
A dime,
A dollar,
Two dollars
Buy shoes for the baby.
House rent to pay.
Gin on Saturday,
Church on Sunday.
My God!
Babies and gin and church
And women and Sunday
All mixed with dimes and
Dollars and clean spittoons
And house rent to pay.
Hey, boy!
A bright bowl of brass is beautiful to the Lord.
Bright polished brass like the cymbals
Of King David’s dancers,
Like the wine cups of Solomon.
Hey, boy!
A clean spittoon on the altar of the Lord.
A clean bright spittoon all newly polished—
At least I can offer that.
Com’mere, boy!

I hope he doesn't let this go. If nobody is held accountable, what disincentive exists to discourage others from repeating this behavior in the future?

U.N.: 750,000 people in Somalia face 'imminent starvation'
A record 4 million people in Somalia need humanitarian aid and 750,000 people are in danger of "imminent starvation," the United Nations said on Monday.
Famine in the African nation has spread to the Bay region, which is now the sixth area in Somalia suffering from an acute shortage of food, according to the the U.N.'s Food Security and Nutrition Analysis Unit (FSNAU) and the Famine Early Warning Systems Network.
Officials are calling for a surge in response efforts as the crisis is predicted to get worse.
Yes, this! Politicians who don't support workers shouldn't get to use Labor Day to get on TV and pretend they care about unemployment.
Pittsburgh Unions Turn Labor Day Parade Into 'March For Jobs,' Shut Out Anti-Union Politicians
WASHINGTON -- Unions in Pittsburgh are bringing a special focus on jobs and the unemployed to their Labor Day parade this year, dubbing the event a "March for Jobs." Organizers expect more than 70,000 people to march in Monday's event, but they've made clear to politicians perceived to be hostile to the labor movement that they will be turned away.
"This year we are inviting union and non-union, laid-off, unemployed and underemployed workers and their families to march with us on the eve of President Obama’s much anticipated announcement of a jobs program aimed at putting America back to work," said Jack Shea, president of the Allegheny County (Pa.) Labor Council.
"We will be marching to show President Obama we are behind all serious efforts to create jobs and encourage him to pull out all the stops by putting the power of the federal government fully behind an aggressive jobs program," Shea added.
Don't tell the Talibangelicals that stem cell research is fruitful.
Stem Cell for Saving Endangered Rhinos and Drills
Scientists have created stem cells from two endangered species, which could help ensure their survival.
The northern white rhino is one of the most endangered animals on Earth, while the drill - a west African primate - is threatened by habitat loss and hunting. With countless endangered animals teetering on the brink of extinction throughout the world, the work of preservation has never been more important.
Scientists report in Nature Methods that the stem cells of these two species could be converted into different types of body cells.
Another reason that medical research on non-human animals is so important.
TB vaccine shows promise in mice: study
PARIS — Researchers in the United States said Sunday they had developed a vaccine for tuberculosis that offered unprecedented protection in mice against the deadly disease.
Tuberculosis kills some 1.7 million people each year, with one in three people around the globe infected, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO). The only vaccine currently in use is notoriously inconsistent.
Researchers led by William Jacobs, a professor at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, determined that the key to warding off TB was to better understand how the bacterium that causes it, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, circumvents the human immune system.
Notre Dame lost too! I couldn't ask for a better weekend.

Dude! Free weed lying on San Jose street snatched up by bystanders
It was a pot head's dream: Free marijuana lying on the street for the taking, without a cop in sight.
San Jose police say a truck illegally carrying marijuana crashed and ended up on its side near Oakridge Mall early Wednesday, sending large bags of pot throughout the intersection as the frightened driver ran away.
Several motorists and pedestrians who happened to be passing through the area ran out and grabbed most of the marijuana bags and took off before police arrived.
