Parts of my state are actually in better shape after the storm than before; the rain put out fires below New Orleans and helped relieve drought conditions. There was a strip between two bands of rain and it caused long periods of dry, calm weather. We never lost power.
Losing power is usually a given during storms like this. After Katrina, we went seven to ten days before power was restored. What has changed is the condition of the lines and transformers in the area. We benefited from an influx of workers, money and other forms of aid. This is as close as I will get to a "message" here. Help in the form of assistance from the state and federal government can make things better in the short and long term.
So the family spent time cooking, reading and cleaning with the goal of staying dry and safe.
