When I was much younger, there was a call for a National ID of some kind. I was too young to remember now how much of a call there was or what problems it was suppose to address. It may well have been a right-wing boogyman (yesterdays Birthers), people getting riled up about something they made up to be riled up about.
But I do recall the discussion around the topic. I grew up in a right-wing world. My family and friends from those days fit right in with the Birthers, Obama Wants to Enslave White People, etc. To sum up, they're all big Glenn Beck fans today.
Anyway, back in the day, this conversation of a National ID ALWAYS lead to quoting Revelation 13:16-18:
And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.
In those days, any attempt at a standardized ID would be met with horror by the right as proof that the biblical Beast was alive and well in Washington. Sometimes the discussion would degrade until Social Security numbers were being pointed to as the real "Mark of the Beast."
So, what brings memories of the "good old days" flooding back?

But now it's the right calling for an ID to protect us from "them."
The right is against any kind of regulation or big government UNLESS it's from right, then it's really, really important.
