I've been away on a work assignment for a couple of weeks and haven't had access to a good internet connection. I haven't been able to write my Macca's Meatless Monday series and won't be able to do so for another week. I've checked in every few days to read a few dairies and I've recc'ed a few but can't upload anything so I hope this short diary gets through.
But now as I look through the site quickly I see that I've walked into a hornet's nest as there are some changes and looks like a boycott by some. I hope I'm not doing the wrong thing by writing this diary because I don't have the time to research what the boycott is about or know what side I am on if any. I'm not much of a drama person and stay pretty focused on the issues and policies that are important to me and on how to move them forward. So here goes and if I get flamed or whatever so be it.
The Good News after the fold
I probably should have said great news because the news that Global meat sales have dropped as Meatless Monday rises is awesome! We are making a difference!
“Consumers have also recently begun to reduce red meat intakes on the grounds of health, safety and sustainability/ environmental issues – as well as a need to reduce overall costs since the start of the global economic recession… Healthy eating is becoming more important for many, and is often encouraged by governments which are keen to improve public health. Such government drives, including those to reduce sodium intake, reduce consumption of saturated fats and sugars, and increase intake of fruits, vegetables and pulses, have all impacted meat consumption.”
As the eminent global climate scientist Dr. James Hansen has said eliminating meat and meat products from our diet is the most effective thing individuals can do to effect climate change. And not only is our action saving the planet it is helping us to be more healthy and even helping our budgets!
So I just wanted to share this great news that our actions are effective and to keep encouraging you to continue reducing and eliminating meat from your diet and to motivate your friends, families and networks to join us!
