Would it be the end of everything for the Palestinians? ... a huge problem for the US? ... a victory for the current Israeli government? ... etc, etc, etc, ........
A lot of politicians and people in the media seem to be trying to make people believe it would.
Why?
Why all the doom and gloom about a possible failure of this application?
Israel’s application for membership in the United Nations failed the first two times it was submitted.
Israel’s first application, on May 15, 1948 - the day after it declared its independence, didn’t even get past the admissions committee and was ignored by the Security Council.
The second application was denied by the Security Council on Dec. 17, 1948 by a vote of 5-1, with 5 abstentions.
- The US, Argentina, Colombia, the USSR, and the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic voted in favor.
- Syria voted against.
- Belgium, The United Kingdom, Canada, China and France abstained.
The third application was approved by the Security Council on March 4, 1949 by a vote of 9-1, with 1 abstention
- The U.S., France, the USSR, China, Argentina, Canada, Cuba, Norway and the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic voted in favor.
- Egypt voted against.
- The United Kingdom abstained.
The General Assembly then voted 37 to 12, with 9 abstentions on May 11, 1949 to admit Israel to the United Nations.

The preamble to the resolution admitting Israel to United Nations membership specifically referred to Israel’s undertakings to implement General Assembly resolutions 181 and 194, the two resolutions that formed the centre of the Palestine issue in the United Nations.
