Many people each day visit the venerable APoD web site for a beautiful image and story. APoD stands for Astronomy Picture of the Day. A look at the archive of APoD shows its first entry on Jun 16, 1995. Take a quick look. It was basic and simple. It has evolved over 16 years into a staple for millions of viewers. For example, below is the image from September 18, 2011. Click it for the full view. Below the Explanation of the image is a navigation bar. Still simple.

Below the squiggle are seven other excellent examples of sites that offer a Picture of the Day feature. Click each image to visit the site. The image you see here will not always be what the link presents since the date has changed. Below each clickable image, I have included some tips on where to find navigation buttons, galleries, archives, etc. on the visited site. Join me.
Earth Science Picture of the Day |
When at the site, try to click the image for an enlarged view. In the upper right of the white area is a 'Previous' button. Below that are 'Related EPODs' and 'More..'. Below those is a list of 'Geology Links' for you to get lost in. I hope you come back.
At this site, look to the left side of the screen. The 'Archives' are arranged by year. Click a year and you are presented a calendar of each month with an image for each date. There is also a French page.
NASA has an astronomical collection of images. At this site, you will find an image in the center of the window. At the lower right are buttons for download of various sizes. Below the image is a row of thumbnails. Click on a grouping to see different sets. Click on a thumbnail to see it larger. Again, an easy place to lose your way.
There are many other links and features built into this page for you to explore.
At the site, look to the upper right of the image to find the date and the 'Previous' button. It will change to 'Today's Photo', 'Previous', and 'Next' when you view other images. National Geographic has a long history of providing beautiful photography to illustrate their magazine. There are a lot of links to information on this page.

The site present the 'Featured Image'.
These are not updated daily. Click the featured image for a larger view, explanation, and details. To the right is a 'Browse by Category' box. Below is a 'Recent Images' box.
Optics Picture of the Day |
This is one of my favorite sites. The imagery is gorgeous and large. Navigation is simple. At the top you find 'Galleries, Previous, Next, Today' buttons. Farther down is an explanation of the phenomenon.
Radiology Picture of the Day |
Medical imaging is an amazing field. The views of the inner parts of the human body reveal the wonders of our design and operation. They also reveal the problems we encounter when something goes wrong. At this site you will find 'Archive' and 'Hall of Fame' at the top right. Archive presents categories and monthly collections. Below right of the image are the 'Previous' and 'Next' buttons.
I think they have fallen behind in their daily image posting.
