The first Kossack Initiated White House Petition, one which calls for stopping the death penalty has passed the 150 signature mark!
The White House created a petition one week ago called "We the people: Your voice in our government". With this new online tool, anyone 13 or older can create or sign a petition on WhiteHouse.gov asking the administration to address important issues facing our country.
Once a petition gets 150 signatures, it becomes visible so that anyone can sign it. This is what the petition on abolishing the death penalty just did. If a petition gets 5,000 signatures within 30 days, it will then be reviewed and the administration will issue an official response to it.
All responses will be posted in this section of the "We the People" section of the White House website, and if you signed the petition that is being responded to, you'll get an email from the White House with the response.
The Kossack initiated petition which just passed the 150 threshold and should now be publicly viewable on the White House website for everyone to read (and sign) is a call for stopping the death penalty:
STOP the Death Penality Now in Memory of Troy Davis
"Joined by Justice Clarence Thomas in dissent, Justice Antonin Scalia criticized his colleagues for thinking that mere innocence is grounds to overturn a conviction."
This is neither fiction nor funny. Our nation's highest court is willing to murder someone regardless of their innocence, due process or appeals.
"Capital punishment is the most PREMEDITATED Murder of all Murders" Camus
The Death Penality is INHUMANE, Abhorrent and beneath our nations stated principles of justice for all. Every time a person is put to death it robs of ALL of our own humanity. Please help to END the DEATH PENALITY NOW in honor of Troy Davis.
While it may be a bit heavy on the all caps, and more centrally perhaps, have constitutional issues about being possible as implementing Federal law (which would require Congress to act) it is a the first successful Kossack initiated petition to gather 150 signatures.
There is another Kossack initiated petition calling for an end of the death penalty which still needs signatures to get past 150. For more info on this petition, visit this diary.
There are also 17 other petitions that have been created by fellow Kossacks which have not yet reached that 150 signature threshold. This diary is an update on their status, with brief summaries of the petitions where needed.
In addition to needing the 150 signatures to become publicly viewable on the White House website, there is still a long way to go for our petitions. We need to get them past the5,000 signature mark for them to be addressed by the administration and get an official response.
So please check out the petitions created by your fellow Kossacks, sign the ones you support, and spread the word and get your friends and family to likewise sign them, and spread the word!
