Eric Cantor's spokesman
passes along a terribly misinformed tweet from Republicans on the House Ways and Means Committee:
RT @waysandmeansgop: Warren #Buffett not a fan of the "Buffett Rule" via @thehill http://bit.ly/...
As you might suspect, suggesting that Warren Buffett doesn't support the Buffett Rule is absurd. In fact, in the very interview that Republicans are promoting, Buffett himself says the White House asked if they could use Buffett's name to describe the Buffett Rule, which is the principle that people with million-dollar incomes should pay at least as much in taxes as the middle-class — and that he said yes.
Not a shock: it was his idea to begin with.
The most charitable explanation for what is going on here is that Republicans have confused the Buffett Rule, a principle that President Obama said should be followed by the deficit reduction super committee, with his plan to pay for the American Jobs Act. Buffett says that while he supports President Obama's effort to get Congress to take action, he hasn't reviewed the legislation in detail, and hasn't taken a position on it. But that has nothing to do with the Buffett Rule, which isn't a piece of legislation — it's an idea. And he supports it.
