Quote of the day: "If I am not for myself, who will be for me? And if I'm only for myself, what am I? And if not now , when? Pirqe Abhoth 1:14

This is a watershed moment for both Glenn Beck and the Progressive movement in this country. The new Fox News and Tea Party enabled Legislators are seated in the Congress. They are toting Constitutions and a very chimerical mandate to "Take Back America". Fox, Glenn Beck and the Republican Party are now extremely vulnerable because "Taking Back America" is simply very vacuous rhetoric - this is an unprecedented opportunity in the history of Progressive politics.
If the new polls are right and I can believe what many of my neighbors and friends say in private – we are a Progressive people. We don’t want children and the elderly without proper healthcare. We don’t want to live in a state of perpetual war. We do care if our neighbors have good jobs. We don’t want to leave a spoiled environment to our children and grandchildren. We don’t see everything and everybody outside the boundaries of The United States as potential enemies. We want financial regulation. We want to be Spiritual but we want Religion and Spirituality to be practiced in our homes and mosques and synagogues and churches. We question the efficacy of allowing Corporations to define the debate – any debate. We want our daughters rights respected. We don’t understand tax cuts for the very wealthy. We want our child, brother, sister, friend, nephew, mother – the soldier, to have a voice, a voice that reflects how, we, the good people of this country truly feel about death, killing, loss, mutilation and sorrow. We want to love and care for each other.
Over the last couple of days I’ve been participating in a good conversation at opednews about the article, “The Left Has Nowhere to Go”* by Chris Hedges. At the end of the article there is a quote from Ralph Nadar, “The black swan question is whether something will erupt that is rare, extreme and unpredictable.” Nadar was talking about organized, effective, response to the political status quo. I believe that this moment holds the seeds of what he is talking about – it’s just needs to be seen as such.
We have a President that says he is a Progressive, the country is Progressive and the Republican Party is dismantling itself. This is “rare, extreme and unpredictable.” In my opinion the only impediment to real change would be the Progressive movement simply not organizing and seizing the moment. The important caveat being that Americans are Progressive - not Liberal, not Radical, not Revolutionary. Yet, this will be a revolution.
A very significant political blunder, based on a bit of our history, that is being undiscovered or denied by younger conservatives and right-wing activists like Glenn Beck is - they have sainted the wrong fellow and invested in the wrong wing of their ideology. Barry Goldwater, not Ronald Reagan, was the true prophet of successful Conservative governance. It was inevitable that Reaganism and intransigent, petrified Conservatism would ultimately fall in ruins because America, as America, was destined to become Progressive in some form.
The birth of American Progressivism was in our very first founding document - The Declaration Of Independence. And, what will be the inevitable coup de grace to Reaganism, the First Amendment, was enshrined in our most important document – The Constitution of the United States of America. Goldwater didn’t want to meddle in our personal and spiritual lives - Reagan did. Beck and all the rest, mistakenly, have chosen the “Church Lady” over Barry Goldwater and the rest will be history.
In their shocking shallowness and amazing state of misunderstanding, these new “mavericks” are insisting upon the reading of the evidence of their irrelevance on the floor of the House of Representatives today. They are unbelievably vulnerable now – it’s time to absolutely support our President, show our fangs, express our wants and desires and demand a seat at the table.
