The imploding New York Republican party, having found no wind for their Bill Weld/Tom Golisano/Randy Daniels/John Faso/Pat Manning trial balloons, is dropping hints about a
possible Donald Trump candidacy for governor.
Could New York's state capitol building become the next Trump Tower?
Republican sources said The Donald - who in 1999 toyed with the idea of running for the White House on the Reform Party line - is mulling a bid to persuade New Yorkers to hire him as their next governor.
More below ...
The story has been a little sexed-up by "Republican sources." In the beginning, State Senate Leader Joseph Bruno simply told reporters that the GOP was talking to a candidate who "is thinking about it, and I bet you you'll vote for him if he ends up running." Time Warner spokespeople have denied black CEO Richard Parsons, a Bush donor, is the mystery candidate, so speculation shot over to Trump.
My take: The GOP could nominate Jesus Christ and still blow this race. All week, they've been pumping a "scandal" for the New York Post and New York Sun at the hopes of nailing Spitzer. The scandal: New York City economic development official John Whitehead, a former Goldman Sachs exec, claimed that Spitzer had made an angry phone call where he said "I will be coming after you." The phone call was eight months ago. Whitehead admitted he had no proof. But the NY GOP demanded an investigation, with one assemblyman saying Spitzer should be impeached.
Did you get that? The GOP attacked Spitzer, who made his reputation being tough on Wall Street moguls ... for being too tough on a Wall Street mogul. Oh, and they hyped it during the Christmas-New Years week, the media dead zone of the calender year.
These people are idiots.
