Updates
(All times are Eastern)
10:40pm: NYTimes:
‘White Shirts’ of Police Dept. Take On Enforcer Role
But the portfolio of the white shirt has now unexpectedly grown to include the role of enforcer.
Martin R. Stolar, a member of the National Lawyers Guild who is representing protesters, said, “It appears that it is white shirts that are directing the rough arrests.” To him, their actions constitute a policy from on high. Even the chief of department, Joseph J. Esposito, the highest-ranking officer, was mixing with marchers last Saturday, briefly holding two people by the arm and directing their arrests.
[ ... ]
In everyday policing situations, the one-two punch of uniformed response usually goes like this: Blue shirts form the first wave, with white shirts following. But those roles seem reversed in the police response to the Wall Street protests.
10:30PM: Two tweets from Richard Engel yesterday:
@richardengelnbc
Expect nypd to react strongly to protests. 'We won't let what happened in london to go on,' I was told
Was told nypd dusted off old scooters from republican convention to deal with protests
10:15pm: Some information from Kevin Gosztola's OWS Blog:
- "Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz visited Occupy Wall Street today."
- "12:22 PM If the NYPD wasn’t doing anything shady, why walk over, pick out a legal observer (the green hat clearly designates him as a legal observer) and arrest him?"
7:50pm: On the livestream they are showing a general assembly meeting. They are still using the twice magnified people's microphone so presumably there are a lot of people there.
7:40pm: From evergreen2 in the comments:
- Guardian: Occupy Wall Street protest: NYPD accused of heavy-handed tactics
- Guardian image gallery: Occupy Wall Street protesters arrested on Brooklyn bridge – in pictures
- CBS image gallery: Wall Street protests spread
- Anjali Mullany from the NY Daily News is looking to speak to people who were on the pedestrian walkway of the bridge and wants to be contacted via Twitter: @anjalimullany
7:30pm: From Charlie Grapski in the comments: Moveon and Rebuild the Dream are calling for a virtual march on Wall Street on Wednesday.
And because we can't all be in New York, we're going to stage a massive "Virtual March on Wall Street" online with our friends at Rebuild the Dream.
They want people to sign up at
this site and then
First thing Wednesday morning, we'll send the instructions for participating online
7:09pm: The Guardian is looking for people who have more information in order to "build a more comprehensive picture of what happened."
Occupy Wall Street – were you arrested on Brooklyn Bridge?
They did include in the article a YouTube video posted by the NYTimes City Room. The footage was released by the NYPD and it shows an officer warning protesters at the beginning of the march that they would be arrested if they walked on the roadway of the bridge. It is doubtful that the people in the rear heard any of this and the ones in the front look like they defied it on purpose and the ones in the rear followed unknowingly. The whole scene seems a bit odd to me.
4:41pm: From evergreen2 in the comments, a picture found via Twitter/YFrog of the veterans at Liberty Park that people have been talking about so much:
4:30pm: From this comment by by Charlie Grapski -- he is looking for people to help him with continued research and analysis on the incidents last Saturday. If you want to know more or are willing to help, contact him via kosmail or at cjgrapski at gmail dot com.
3:37pm: From the livestream: Someone from the comfort committee:
They need rain gear, cold weather gear... "From your closet or from your local mom and pop store." Sleeping bags, dry bedding, bivy sacks (waterproof sleeping bag covers), ponchos, tarps, gloves, hats. Waterproof boots.
3:39pm: From the livestream: Lorenzo says he is wearing a donated sweatshirt. Last night it was 50 and windy and raining.
3:18pm: 8,012 viewers on the livestream
3:00pm: From evergreen2 in the comments (from a tweet):
@OccupyWallSt
Occupy Wall Street
West Wing Report's Paul Brandus - an accredited member of the White House Press Corps - will discuss OWS & Obama at 2:20 om @WTOP
We think that is 2:20pm Eastern.
2:48pm: From the livestream, Lorenzo:
- "People asking about donations: gloves, jackets, sweatshirts, mummy socks [? waterproof bags for sleeping bags? ] -- things to keep people warm."
- "Morale is high"
- "There is one fully uniformed and a bunch of partially uniformed veterans."
- "takethesquare.net is a great guide on how to run a general assembly."
- "The park is a drug-free and alcohol-free space."
- "If you want to order pizza for us go to our donate page and you'll find places that will deliver."
- "We try to have training every day, civil disobedience, legal training for dealing with the police."
- Observation: People in chat are asking him to bring one of the military guys to the media center to be interviewed. Lots of interest in the veterans who are there.
2:08pm:
About the Occupied Wall Street Journal paper. I found their fundraising page and on it it says that they will put out PDFs ASAP:
Occupy Wall Street Media
THE FIRST ISSUE IS OUT! We will put PDFs online as soon as possible.
PLEASE KEEP CONTRIBUTING! We don't have billions like FOX News nor are we bankrolled by the Koch brothers. We only have YOU! You have our tremendous gratitude, but this money will only pay for two issues. The more money we get, the more newspapers, posters, stickers and flyers we can print to get out the voice of the 99%! Please keep contributing and encouraging all your friends, family and colleagues to do likewise!
1:45pm: From ctsteve in the comments with h/t to COwoman -- ctsteve: "Video proof that the police... led the protesters onto the bridge roadway, where the police later trapped them."
Take a look at the video and see for yourself what happened. I think the most telling thing is at about the 35 second mark. I agree with ctsteve that this video should go viral. It has about 2200 views right now on YouTube.
1:23pm: From Maelstorm and gulfgal98 in the comments: They observed that there were more than 20K viewers on the livestream yesterday during the bridge arrests.
1:10pm: From the livestream:
-I can hear drums and many people in the background.
-Monica said that everyone is asking about the marines (as far as I know they are not only Marines but veterans from different armed forces) and she wanted to take the livestream computer over to show people the veterans. Vlad explained that they cannot move around right now, have to remain stationary while broadcasting.
- Vlad: "Police have taken all of our mobile broadcasting equipment... have to stay on wifi... can't find the 4g hotspot, it's all gone... had 3 mobile hotspots lost two due to arrests [ and something happened to the third one ] ,... going to get more today which will allow us to move around."
- Vlad: "There might be a general assembly at 1pm, don't know, oh it's 1 now, I don't know." [ So to summarize, we don't know what time a general assembly (GA) will be held today. ]
12:50pm: From Lorenzo on the livestream:
- "People in traffic seemed to be very supportive... people alongside us were very cool... people on the other side of the bridge were cheering us on."
- "On sunday we try to make sure that people rest... not exactly sure if we'll march... we'll have educational events..."
- "If you want to march today you should probably come down and organize one -- there will probably be people who are willing to go."
- "Don't know about the marines but there are veterans here who are in solidarity with us"
- "The march itself yesterday was extremely peaceful.... don't know how much more peaceful we can get."
- "As for donations: We need stuff to sleeping pads, tarps, sleeping bags, gloves, socks, things to keep people warm.... even on nights when it's really rough everyone is still here."
- "Donations can be sent to to nycga.net/donate or to our UPS address"
- Monica is now on the livestream explaining what happened yesterday in Spanish.
12:32pm: From the livestream:
- "Our wifi hotspots are missing so it will be a little harder for us this week... we still have some"
- Retired uniformed veterans are at the entrance to the park right now
- Have heard that some NYPD police officers are disillusioned by this and are going to support the protesters
- "From what I heard there were 20,000 people viewing yesterday."
- There are a lot of people chanting right now "Whose street? Our street."
12:10pm: Livestream is back up. Info from the livestream:
They said they ran out of gasoline for their generator. It was mentioned that JP Morgan Chase has given NYPD millions for for security monitoring equipment. They are saying that they don't know if there will be a march today - that will be decided by the General Assembly (GA). Again they emphasize that the support of livestream viewers is important. The chat room is very busy. He is answering questions.
A lot of people who were arrested and released have returned.
Also heard: A lot of juveniles "are marching with us" and are organizing at their high schools. Says "you never get read your miranda rights, you have to claim them for yourself."
11:32am: Burned mentions something important in the comments. Media team at #OWS (OccupyWallStreet) have mentioned online numerous times that they hope to increase the number of people watching the livestream. So the more people watching the livestream as much as possible, the better. Last night I saw one of the admins say they'd like to get it up to a million. Well I don't know if he was kidding or not or how well their servers would handle that, but the more the better. For instance, protesters on the Brooklyn Bridge passenger walkway were shouting to the police to tell them that ten thousand people were watching. Last night one of the livestream admins also said that if you are at #OWS you can do this:
Download Qik.com or ustream.com to your phone and tell us your phone number
10:45am: The "Occupied Wall Street Journal" was printed and many copies were available in the park yesterday and protesters were giving them out along the march route. I don't know if anyone has scanned it yet and made it available as a PDF but here is what it looks like (excuse the dining room table around the edges):
10:40am: Livestream is not live yet. Very late last night, one of the chat administrators, hongpong, had a Q&A session on camera. He said that he thought the media team had lost some equipment (equipment carried by those out marching) yesterday during the arrests.
10:25am: I now see that angelajean is doing a much needed organizing diary, a mothership diary that will cover all the #Occupy events so that answers my question in my 9:15am post. I will link to that mothership diary in the daily liveblog diaries for #OccupyWallStreet. This liveblog will serve a different purpose -- short, concise timestamp updates. As I said before, we'll see how this goes. Maybe it will be incorporated into the mothership diary, maybe it will be linked by it, maybe it won't be necessary. I am still thinking that a concise liveblog for OWS in contemporaneous journal format would be useful for people trying to get caught up in a quick read.
9:45am: Well this story is on the front pages of a lot of newpapers this Sunday morning. NYTimes has their city room blog story linked on the front page. According to them, the number arrested is more than 700.
NYTimes: Police Arrest More Than 700 Protesters on Brooklyn Bridge
WaPo: 700 arrested after swarming NY’s Brooklyn Bridge, shutting down lane of traffic for hours
Guardian: Occupy Wall Street protesters arrested on Brooklyn Bridge
Chicago Tribune: Over 700 arrested after swarming NY's Brooklyn Bridge, shutting down lane of traffic for hours
Chicago Sun Times: Over 700 arrested in Occupy Wall Street march on Brooklyn Bridge
9:30am: The livestream is not live yet as far as I can tell. They have been playing a lot of video from yesterday's march and the arrests on the Brooklyn Bridge. I was there for the march yesterday but did not go as far as the bridge and therefore wasn't arrested. I have some video and pictures that I will be posting when I can get them uploaded to YouTube. There are a lot of other videos available on YouTube and some of them are linked in other diaries here. This morning around 6:30am there were 4600+ people watching the livestream.
9:15am: I'm going to give this a try, doing a daily liveblog, in the same style as AlJazeera and other news organizations do it, with timestamped updates, simple and concise, hopefully with the help of commenters. I'll try to post it every day at the opening bell (9:30am) and keep it going for as long as it makes sense to do so. I don't know yet whether we can aggregate the other #Occupy movements in other cities into one liveblog. I'll wait to see what others are doing with those as they ramp up and I am very open to suggestions. Maybe one liveblog can link to other liveblogs from other cities or maybe we can fit the updates into one liveblog? I think we'll have to see how this works out and play it by ear.
