It was interesting to read the news stories about the Wall Street protest today. I have the inside story because my daughter was there. She was on the walkway part of the bridge and watched people get arrested. She said she was a little nervous, that she had never seen so many police at a protest (and she has participated in other marches and protests before). She, like so many other young people, worked hard, went to a good college, and is now working at a low paying job that doesn't require a college degree. But she is grateful to have a job. So many of her friends have been unable to find work or are working for minimum wage. Many are having to work two jobs to make ends meet (and to pay back college loans). What she described and the accounts of the protest I read didn't always match up...I prefer to believe the accounts of someone who was there (my daughter). I am proud of my daughter for participating in the protest. I am proud of young people for standing up. We, the people of the United States have allowed a small minority of oligarchs to hijack our country but we will no longer remain hostage. What does concern me is the lack of coverage by the mainstream media, the suppression of information, and the obvious attempts to shut this movement down. I have been watching the live feed off and on since Day 1. I find it interesting that the news media would cover protests in Egypt 24 hours a day but will barely cover this movement that is going on right here in our own country. We have a right to protest and peacefully assemble. We have the right to "petition the government for a redress of our grievances." The problem we face is how do we get our government to listen? Do we, as regular citizens, have access to our government officials? Has anyone from our government sat down with these young people and addressed their concerns? It seems taking to the streets is the only way people can get their voices heard (and even then they are trying to suppress those voices with a media blackout and a strong authoritarian presence). So if this is what the young people and all of us must do to be heard then so be it...let's take to the streets and let our voices be heard.
