OWS WORKING GROUPS: RESEARCH
RECONSTRUCTION: March of September 24th
The following is an OWS Working Group Project. The goals is to generate a comprehensive resource for studying, analyzing, and documenting the events associated with the March of September 24th.
The diary will continually be updated as information is gathered. Below I put an initial brief outline - the details to be filled in.
Please post comments or send a private message to add or suggest information. Also please discuss ideas on how to accomplish this goal.
If you are willing to contribute to this effort - please bookmark the diary so you can easily return to it. Also the project should be able to be found via the mothership as well as the working group diary.

Police "escorted" the protests. Primarily following behind. Jeanne Mansfield describes. Video shows police vehicles following with lights/no sirens. Blue Shirts. No aggression. No disruption attempts |

Union Square |
|
Jeanne Mansfield reports that the March circled Union Square a couple of times without incident. |
|
|
|
It appears that the March was, by this time at least, both using the sidewalk and the street - but without any prohibition by the NYPD. |

3. Police Divert the flow of the March |
|
|
|
Jeanne Mansfield reports that the March, after circling the Square a few times, is instructed to return downtown via a route that will take them past the United Nations. She reports, however, that the street they were taking was blocked. Then the street that she was detoured on to was blocked. And that then the protest was forced on to Broadway. |

How did the March turn west onto 12th Street? Were they directed by the police onto this street - or did only some turn down 12th? |

Video Evidence

At some point the police started making arrests. The video evidence shows clearly one of the earlier arrests was of GWU Law student Robert Stephens for stopping in the street near a bank. He was told to keep moving but chose to be arrested as an act of protest. As there was no traffic flowing on the street at the time, and it appears that traffic had been officially stopped by the NYPD, it is not clear what the justification for such an arrest would be. This is also the earliest documented evidence of the presence of Deputy Inspector Anthony Bologna and his direct involvement in making arrests.
At the time several people were videotaping and photographing Stephens' statements and act. At one point an as yet unidentified (although with a badge) NYPD officer in a red jacket singles out Marissa Holmes and tells her to move on. Although she was simply documenting the events she did not take any action other than not be as quick to move as the officer would have liked to have caused a problem. Immediately the officer begins threatening arrest and within seconds begins this arrest. As she is taken to the police car down the street she is told she is being arrested for Resisting Arrest although there is no incident of resistance shown on the two videos that have been found documenting this event. She merely asks the officer questions when she is confronted by him.
It is not yet clear where on the route downtown these arrests took place. Was this also on 12th Street but east of University Place?

Not sure what street this was on or exact time. Was this on 12th Street or prior to turning? |

As the leading edge of the march approaches the intersection of East 12th St. and University Place the police appear to be attempting to stop or break up the march. Near the intersection the police begin to confront and single out individuals for arrest. |
