Occupy Charlotte started at 3:00 PM today, a spokesman said they had 70 people committed by signing up on their Facebook page. The first page was taken down after the family received threats of violence to their home and family members. Another community member Thomas Shope step forward to put up a new Facebook page.
My estimate was 500 to 600 showed up and ready to march from old City Hall on Trade St. to Bank of Americas corporate head quarters in downtown Charlotte.
They would spend the next hour and a half shouting the same slogan that the occupiers of Wall Street have been shouting. Some people joined or honked their horns in support of OCNC once they we’re standing in front of B of A.
Police we’re respectful of the protester and the march went off with out a hitch. The local media was there so I expect that there will be coverage on the local stations and print media.
Two Ron Paul supporters showed up, one holding Ron Paul for President sign and marched along with OCNC.
This seemed to be a well planed event but like OWS there was no one spokesperson. They had there first meeting about 2 weeks ago. Overall I would this was a great turn out with limited exposure.
Some of their supporters plan to camp on the lawn for up to a year. About 70 had pledged to do so, but it’s unclear how many will remain to night as they settled in at the old City Hall building in downtown Charlotte late this evening.
5:41 PM PT: WBTV has posting on their site, they claim several hundred marchers.
