Hello from Santa Fe, New Mexico, where the fall weather has been gorgeous all week.
We spent the better part of Thursday and Friday putting up posters for an upcoming Community Fund Raiser for WildEarth Guardians.
Even though our legs were tired of riding, Saturday morning we rode our folding bikes three miles to the bus stop and we were elated that we were able to get to the Occupy Santa Fe camp site before the march began.
On the Move
Word had come Friday night from the Santa Fe Police that what was thought to be city land was actually private land and that the camp would have to be moved from its location across from Bank of America. Everything had to be cleared out Saturday, and a meeting is scheduled for later today to decide where to go next.
Non-violence but....
q
We got in on the last of the human microphone orientation for the march that had been arranged with the City. The speaker said that the General Assembly had voted that the march to the New Mexico Capitol would be non violent. He also said that if someone decided to get arrested, be sure to have the phone number for the Occupy Santa Fe attorney written on a paper on their person.
Ages of the participants ranged from pre-school to elderly. We decided to push our bikes along and carry our signs so we would not have to come back to the start. We walked along the side walk march behind several people in their 20's. Was interesting to hear them sharing how they had learned of Occupy and the arab spring.
Santa Fe Police
We were impressed with the Santa Fe Police, and we and numerous others thanked them.
Santa Fe Police cars stopped traffic at each intersection along the approx 1.5 mile route. Drivers along the way honked in support. One man who looked to have mental challenges had accosted the Police about what was going on. He then walked into the march and had a serious 'WTF?' look on his face.
One participant fell and was quickly surrounded by other marchers.
We passed the Santa Fe Farmer's Market at the Railyard and got applause from several folks shopping there.
The Roundhouse
We arrived at the New Mexico State Capitol to loud applause by those already there.
More pictures of the fun are waiting for you below....
Namaste.
