Joe Lieberman (Mike Segar/Reuters)
Joe Lieberman would like to remind you that he is still around. And by "remind you," he of course means "
tweak his own party for no reason because that's pretty much the only thing that gets him out of bed in the morning."
For about an hour, Mr. Lieberman gave a private briefing of sorts on a range of topics, including national security, to [Linda] McMahon, who would no doubt benefit from adding political heft to her résumé after a career at World Wrestling Entertainment. [...]
In addition to Ms. McMahon, he has spoken with Christopher Shays, a former Republican congressman, about Mr. Shays’s own plans to run for his Senate seat.
“I encouraged him,” said Mr. Lieberman, who met with Mr. Shays in his Washington office.
So he's giving advice and encouragement to the Republicans who want to run for his seat. Well, of course he is, I guess. But the article hints at perhaps the issue here:
In the meantime, some Connecticut Democrats who are eyeing the party’s nomination for his seat are not particularly interested in getting Mr. Lieberman’s support. [...]
Susan Bysiewicz, a former Connecticut secretary of state who is seeking the Democratic nomination for Senate, noted in an interview that Mr. Lieberman was unpopular with rank-and-file Democrats.
“Senator Lieberman’s endorsement would not be helpful,” she said, adding that she believed he was more closely identified with the Republicans these days.
Representative Christopher S. Murphy, a three-term Democrat who is also running for Mr. Lieberman’s seat, said, “I’m not sure his support is relevant.”
The Democrats don't want Lieberman's support, so he'll show them. By giving advice to the other side!
The article suggests Lieberman's move is perhaps geared mostly at pissing off his old party, but I'm not sure Lieberman giving advice to anyone can really be considered doing them a favor. So heck: go for it, Joe. It's a lot better than your usual routine, which is helping to block important legislation because Democrats once hurt your feelings.
