Yesterday I had to hang around my empty house in Minneapolis- yes, another of those infamous little houses that nobody wants- and let a sub-sub-contractor for the gas company in to do a mandatory check for leaks. Business was slow, so got to talk to the guy for a while- he had all of three inspections to make for the day. Problem is, he's getting paid by the job- $5 a house plus $1 for car expenses. Now if the gas company had their act together and lined up all the inspections in one neighborhood you could actually make some money at that rate. But it doesn't work logicly like that. He lives in Brooklyn Center so he had a five mile drive to my place, his first stop. Next stop was in Blaine, ten miles the other direction. His third and final stop for the day is way back the other direction in Chaska, 50 miles away.
So he has to drive over 100 miles that day to earn a lousy $18. His $100 beater subcompact probably gets 25 MPG in the city, so he'll probably burn 5 gallons of gas to make his rounds. At going price that's about $18, exactly what he's gettin' paid. Not a cent towards tires, insurance, or a replacement beater for when this $100 beater (soon) dies. And not a penny for food, rent, health care, old age, etc.. And the DC politicians wonder why the people are mad?
And he doesn't like Obama, and thinks Romney will improve things... Democrats, what's wrong with your messaging?
