From popular or somewhat popular demand I am writing a Wednesday music diary for DKOMA. This is a somewhat contentious issue but this diary is about the beginnings of punk rock and what it means.
For me the band rightfully most identified with starting punk rock was and is the Ramones in 1974 not that I don't give the Sex Pistols some credit, but the Ramones is just a better band that played louder, faster, stayed together, and performed earlier.
March 30, 1974, at Performance Studios.[2] The songs they played were very fast and very short; most clocked in at under two minutes. Around this time, a new music scene was emerging in New York centered around two clubs in downtown Manhattan—Max's Kansas City and, more famously, CBGB (usually referred to as CBGB's). The Ramones made their CBGB debut on August 16.
Male prostitution FTW.
Hey! Ho! Let's go!(That's where "Let's Go!" comes from)
There were bands that influenced punk and began the local New York scene that later spawned the Ramones, Blondie, Television and Talking Heads.[2] and the Ramones before 1974 like the New York Dolls:
Steve Jones from the Sex Pistols got a lot of his style from Johnny Thunders who was in this band.
I like the Sex Pistols though not as much as the Damned as far as U.K punk. (Ratt Scabies!)
I also love the Buzzcocks.
And I'm hurt!
Iggy Pop and the Stooges were also very influential to the start of punk rock
As well as MC5:
But officially IMO, it started with the Ramones in 1974.
And there's more I left out, but there is always layers left to be explored. Thank you for visiting and traveling back to the seventies with me today.
