As many as five million Americans won't have the right to cast their ballot next November, if Republican governors and legislatures get their way.
Thirty-four states have either pending legislation or new laws severely restricting the ability of a specific group of voters—students, minorities, low-income people, people with disabilities—to register to vote, or to cast their ballots. One of those states is Maine, where Republican Gov. Paul LePage and his allies in the legislature passed a law to eliminate the law that's been on the book for 40 years allowing voters to register and vote on election day.
A coalition of state and local organizations organized as Protect Maine Votes is fighting back. They've gathered enough signatures to force a statewide referendum on Nov. 8. Question 1 is a People's Veto of this law and a restoration of same-day registration.

Along with Ohio's Issue 2, this is one of the most important initiatives on the ballot in the entire nation this November. This is the first state where we can help stop the war on voting, and help make sure students, immigrants, people with multiple jobs, or anyone who just lost their home can still exercise one of their most basic rights: voting.
You can help. In order to win this referendum, Protect Maine Votes needs just $20,000 a day to run their ad across the entire state. Your $5 will help run this ad for one day.
We can stop the Republican war on voting, one state at a time.
