Herman Cain's spokesman says being the frontrunner is making him sleepy (Eric Thayer/Reuters)
I guess you can forget about Herman Cain taking that 3:00AM phone call, because it's not even 2012 yet and his campaign says he
needs a little more pillow time:
“We’re trying to slow down a little bit, make sure he’s rested, make sure he’s focused,” says J.D. Gordon, the campaign’s vice president for communications. The goal is to achieve a “more deliberate pace…so we don’t make those kinds of mistakes.”
Gordon says his boss has been doing as many as seven or eight events a day, “and when you do that and don’t use a Teleprompter, sometimes you can make a mistake… People understand he’s not a career politician; he’s very spontaneous, they know how fast he’s going. People give him more leeway than they would someone who’s in Congress or a governor.”
Yeah, I can see how getting a bad night of sleep could cause you to accidentally say you're pro-choice when you're really pro-life. Happens to me all the time (except the other way around).
But the thing I really don't understand is why Herman Cain's campaign is making excuses for their boss. Sure, he's said some tremendously dumb things. Yes, they are running some of the weirdest web videos ever. And there's no doubt that Godfather's Pizza is one of the worst things that ever happened to the American culinary experience.
Yet despite all that, Herman Cain is leading the field. He's number one. And his fundraising is taking off: he's raised $3 million this month already. Even if the only reason for this outpouring of support is the fact that Rick Perry is dumber than a sack of rocks and Mitt Romney has all the consistency of a weather vane, they should be bragging about it! Not apologizing.
I mean, if Herman Cain's own campaign can't help but apologize about their boss when their boss is winning, then how long will it take before conservative voters start wondering if a Cain administration would apologize for America? And if you're a conservative voter, there's nothing in the world worse than that, right?
