I went to get my Florida DL renewed last week. Aside from the fact it took over two hours and $56 to accomplish, I'd say it went smoothly. Now I have the picture ID I need to vote. Since I'm a driver its a 2 bird - one stone type arrangement.
However, if I weren't still driving, exercising my right to vote would require a $25 fee for the picture ID. And that, my friends, is a poll tax. Apparently, all true blue Floridians drive and no additional hoops (aside from registration) need to be negotiated in order to vote.
But if you're too old to drive, or disabled and can't drive, or too poor or young to afford to drive, you're shit out of luck when voting time rolls around. Coincidence? Hardly. As it happens, a great many seniors, the disabled, the poor and the young tend to vote Democratic. What better way to keep the riff-raff away from the polls.
Now, poll taxes have been outlawed for years. But I guess in Republican land, where terrorists are hiding under every bed and in every available closet, the picture ID will ensure that no terrorists are illegally voting (actually, hardly anyone, anywhere, is illegally voting but that's a whole other conservative pathology).
To sum up, if you're a non-driver in Florida, it's gonna cost you to vote. Simples.
So how is this not a poll tax, again?
