Unless Occupy Richmond activists and news reporters were badly punked by people in really good costumes, police officers appear to have chosen the early hours of Halloween morning to raid and break up the Occupy Richmond camp at Kanawsha Plaza, where activists have been camped since October 15th.
Local news has only aired about 60 seconds of footage thus far. Members of the occupation can be seen sitting quietly on the curb dressed in winter clothing awaiting arrest. A paddywagon-type vehicle is visible in the background, along with some other vehicles with flashing lights. There does not appear to be any violent activity going on.
The raid began around 1 a.m. A reporter on the scene says that about seven activists have been arrested and taken away, along with at least one member of the press. A number of other activists were issued citations--for what, it's not yet clear.
Interviews with some of the occupiers are promised shortly. At present, all the reporters on the scene seem to be standing well out of the way of police to avoid being arrested.
