OK, so it isn't important to most people that my foot hurts. But for me and the dozen or so volunteers who have been going door-to-door, doing lit drops and phone banking for my campaign for local office, it is a big deal.
As those of you who have read my previous diaries know, this year I am running for a seat on my local town board in Schodack, Rensselaer County, NY. This is the third year in a row that I am running for a local office.
While I have enthusiasm, energy and commitment for campaigning, the one thing I don't have is the physical wherewithal for hoofing it around town for the last few months. But when you are a candidate, you have to get out there if you want your volunteers to remain enthusiastic and committed and if you want people to take you seriously.
In these waning days of this election cycle, check out your local campaigns and see how you can lend a hand. In all likelihood, your local candidate is short of money, has few volunteers and his or her feet are hurting just like mine.
Give them a call and see how you can help make the difference between winning and losing. Your help now on the local level will certainly have a tremendous impact on your day-to-day life in your community.
Because as you well know, all politics is local.
