An open letter Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, Florida Congresswoman, DNC Chair, and Vice Chair of the House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee.
Dear Debbie,
Last night on Lawrence O’Donnell you seemed to be evading the question of the Constitutionality of an individual mandate. Do you not have an opinion about the matter? Ohio voters thought it was an important enough question to put on the ballot and rejected the idea by a 2 to 1 margin. Do you think it should be Constitutional? Because the way I look at it, you are forcing people to buy health insurance from a private company, and that seems Unconstitutional right there because a) we’re talking about something as fundamental as people’s health and b) the nature of these companies are such that they are incentivized not so much to care for their customers’ health as to generate a profit for their shareholders and executives. Should I be made to participate in that system? Would you like me to smile while I’m fed to the sharks? Is there anything else you’d like to force me to buy?
If there’s one thing you should take from Ohio’s amendment to prohibit health care mandates it’s that the people want something better than HR 3200. But you know, there is a way to avoid the philosophical dilemma, bring down costs, and most importantly, provide health care for everyone. It’s called socialized medicine, and I know that socialism is a scary word and we were never going to get there in one step but for God’s sake, at leave give the People an Option.
Thanks for your concern,
Frank Lee Speaking
