Could Newt Gingrich really be the strongest of the bunch?
Hahahaha:
Newt Gingrich is the strongest Republican candidate when matched head to head against Democratic President Barack Obama, according to a McClatchy-Marist Poll released Tuesday.
The former speaker of the House of Representatives is neck and neck with the incumbent president, back just 2 percentage points among registered voters. Obama leads 47 percent to 45 percent.
Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney is next closest, trailing Obama by 4 percentage points. In that matchup, Obama leads 48 percent to 44 percent.
Rep. Ron Paul of Texas is the third best bet for the Republicans right now, 8 points back from Obama. No other Republican is within single digits of Obama. The survey has an error margin of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
You'd have to show me a lot more polls than just one to convince me that Newt Gingrich is the GOP's best candidate ... but the fact that it's something within the realm of possibility is in itself hilarious. And the great thing about numbers like this is that it doesn't even matter if they are true, because while this country is never going to elect a thrice-married lobbyist who had an affair with a staffer while leading Bill Clinton's impeachment, the nomination is still anybody's game. If you doubt that, take a moment to remind yourself about Sharron Angle, Joe Miller and Christine O'Donnell ... and just imagine how much bigger their wins would have been if they'd had polls showing them to be the strongest candidates for the GOP.
