This is an ugly question, I am reluctant to even ask this, but it needs to be said.
New polls show that approval for congress is at an all time low- 9 percent.
While Congress embodies a single body of government, it also includes hundreds of distinct viewpoints, with many variations on ideology.
Keeping all of this in mind- If the president was polling this low- would he be forced to resign?
Further muddying the waters, we all realize that this isn’t a direct democracy.
As a republic, we understand that after we elect a representative, they can make unpopular choices that go against the wishes of the many. While the system was built to protect against a potential tyranny of the majority- How many unpopular choices are too many, how many times can you defy the wishes of the masses?
Suppose the super committee decides to cut entitlements, privatize them, and then lower taxes for the wealthiest. Data from multiple polls show that 70% of the nation would be opposed to these solutions.
What do we have to do in order to convince our representatives that this course of action can only lead to even more discontent?
We replace congress every two years, but in many instances, the replacements opposition to their constituent’s wishes intensifies. This process exacerbates citizen angst and ultimately undermines our entire system of government. The Occupy movement has sprung up precisely because people no longer have faith in government, they no longer respect it.
When you replace one jerk, with an even bigger one, voting begins to lose its luster; citizens begin to address their grievances in different ways. Occupying a site 24/7 is an expression of a collective voice that has been muted by traditional means. When the populace looks to redress authentic wrongdoing in ways other than voting, we have a problem that requires substantial change, but congress is intent on giving us more of the same.
At what point does their dreadful lack of approval signify an irreparable problem?
Please understand this:
If 9 percent isn't low enough, at what point would you say there is a problem?
Five percent- how about two percent?
If we were talking about a foreign leader, American politicians would ask for that head of state to voluntarily resign- sans violence.
Personally, i abhor violence, I am not advocating for violence in any way.
Violence shouldn't be necessary to effect positive change in this country- but something (other than a violent solution) needs to be done, and voting just isn't cutting it.
Occupy just didn't happen, its here for legitimate reasons, people have lost faith in the system. People are angry, and no one in power seems to listen to us- what do you do then?
i don't know what the solution is, i do know that violence is not the answer.
the question still needs to be asked- what now?
