I received a reply from Senator Franken (D-MN), who is my representative. I appreciated his response, and I thoughty I would share it with you:
Thank you for contacting me about the Stop Deceptive Advertising for Women's Services Act. I appreciate hearing from you on this important topic.
I believe women should have access to a full range of reproductive services. Family planning services, including sex education, access to contraception, and maternity care go a long way in reducing unplanned pregnancies and abortions. A woman must have the ability to have a safe, legal abortion. Medically accurate care is also critical. All patients need to be aware of exactly what services their nurses and doctors are providing.
S. 3554, the Stop Deceptive Advertising for Women's Service Act, was introduced by Senator Bob Menendez on June 30, 2010. This bill would direct the Federal Trade Commission to establish rules prohibiting advertisements that create the false impression that a particular organization provides abortions. After its introduction, this bill was referred to the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation.
It's important to the health of all women that they are able to access the care they seek. Although this bill ultimately did not pass during the 111th Congress, I will be sure to keep your thoughts on this bill in mind if it is reintroduced.
Thank you again for contacting me, and please do not hesitate to do so in the future on this or any other matter of concern to you.
