So, I've been a reader of the Native Appropriations blog for sometime time now because its smart, witty and highlights the farce/tragedy of how Indigenous peoples have been and continue to be treated in N. America. It's also a great resource for teaching, particularly for anyone whose classes touch upon things like cultural appropriation, media representation, and the politics of race and ethnicity.
Having recently directed my students to the blog and also shown the film Reel Injuns in my class, one could say that I was in the right frame of mind to be driven completely ape shit by the items I found for sale on Cabela's website this week.
I originally wrote the following as a letter to author of the Native Appropriations blog, but it spiraled into something bigger and is now smack dab on everyone's Thanksgiving plate courtesy of Souciant: a newish Lefty magazine founded by folks who were previously involved with Bad Subjects, Punk Planet, and several other notable independent media outlets.
Here's the essay. Feel free to pass it along, and do yourself a favor and check out the other great articles posted on the Souciant site.
