Having visited Occupy DC's site in person a few times and having visited the similar group Stop the Machine's site once, yesterday I decided to check out the other city that currently have an Occupy movement in order to compare the two. While Occupy DC have been generally on good terms with the police there, Occupy Baltimore is a different story. City officials want Occupy Baltimore to scale back on its presence while Occupy Baltimore have applied for a permit to stay there until next April. In the meantime, they remain in some prime real estate, as the photos I took show. First up is the view of the encampment that I took from the Skywalk above the fountain at McKeldin Square.
More photos after the jump...
Here's a view of Occupy Baltimore, which is located underneath the PNC Bank Building.
Here's a wide-angled shot of the encampment. The low building with the green roof on the far left is one of the Harborplace pavilions.
Here's the actual encampment itself. When I visited, the number of tents outnumbered the people who were there.
There was a workshop already in progress when I was there.
Like its DC counterpart, Occupy Baltimore also has a People's Library. So far it's small but it has a lot of potential.
The tall building in the photo below is the Baltimore World Trade Center. The tall masts that are behind the trees belong to the U.S.S. Constellation. The flag poles to the right of the tall masts and trees are the ones that are located in the area between the two Harborplace pavilions.
The olive green tent is the food tent.
A few of the local kids took advantage of the hula hoops that Occupy Baltimore had on hand for anyone who wanted to borrow them.
I didn't stay long because I made the dumb mistake of not bringing my folding chair with me and there weren't a lot of seating areas suitable for me, especially since I'm still recuperating from hip surgery that I had in September. The next time I visit, I will bring a folding chair. I will also try to visit when there is an event that I'm interested in.
