Ginger White says she had a 13-year
affair with Herman Cain
Here's the latest (and perhaps last) chapter in the Herman Cain campaign: Ginger White, an Atlanta businesswoman, is claiming she had a 13-year consensual affair with Cain. WAGA, Fox's Atlanta affiliate, is promising more details at the top of its 6:00PM ET newscast (I'll be tracking it live in this post and you can
watch it live here), but they are
promising to unveil documents that White says proves her claim.
On CNN, Cain said he considered White to be a friend and denied that he'd ever had a sexual relationship with her. But his lawyer released an oddball statement claiming that Cain believed he had no obligation to address the claims.
Mr. Cain has alerted his wife to this new accusation and discussed it with her. He has no obligation to discuss these types of accusations publicly with the media and he will not do so even if his principled position is viewed unfavorably by members of the media.
If it weren't for the hypocrisy of Republicans trying to control bedroom behavior, Cain's lawyer might have a reasonable point. But by addressing them on CNN, Cain seems to have rendered what the lawyer said moot. That of course raises the question of why Cain authorized his lawyer to release the statement in the first place.
Perhaps Cain will address that issue on the newscast. I'll be updating this post live. And in case you missed the link above, you can watch broadcast live right here.
3:01 PM PT: I don't know about you, but for me, the live feed is just showing a weather radar image. Hopefully they do the live webcast as promised, but at this moment they don't seem to be providing it.
3:09 PM PT: Memo to news stations: Don't bother to promise live broadcasts unless you're going to actually offer the live broadcast you promised.
3:10 PM PT: Haha, CNN is about to do an interview with thrice-married Newt Gingrich. Can't wait to hear what he has to say about this.
3:13 PM PT: WAGA has posted their report online. Among the salient passages:
She showed us some of her cell phone bills that included 61 phone calls or text messages to or from a number starting with 678. She says it is Herman Cain's private cell phone. The calls were made during four different months-- calls or texts made as early as 4:26 in the early morning, and as late as 7:52 at night. The latest were in September of this year.
“We've never worked together,” said White. “And I can't imagine someone phoning or texting me for the last two and a half years, just because.”
We texted the number and Herman Cain called us back. He told us he "knew Ginger White" but said these are "more false allegations." He said she had his number because he was "trying to help her financially.”
