Romney has basically run as an economic technocrat who can beat Obama; Gingrich is running as a conservative leader who can save America. Beyond all of Romney's flip-flopping problems, it also seems he has thus far miscalculated what Republicans say they want. And Gingrich has been willing to give it to them.
