How I once failed at selling subscriptions.
~or~
It's not my fault, it was the Buick's.
The last time I tried to sell subscriptions still haunts me, and I have dentist bills to prove it. When I was 16, my buddies and I were conned into one of those deals selling magazines door-to-door in the ghetto. On the way home after our first and only day on the job, my friend's '64 Corvair was hit head-on by a speeding Buick. Of course, Buicks always win over Corvairs.
However, and by the way, screw you Ralph Nader, we all survived with minor injuries.
Once I recovered from the root canals and having my lips sewn back on, I cashed the insurance settlement check ($800) and went to Daytona Beach where I almost learned to surf.
I got the paddling out part down pretty much. The coming back in on the board; not so much.
The good news: I found that driving around Daytona with a rented surfboard strapped to the roof of my car was a blond-bikini-beach-babe magnet.
A little pain; a huge gain.
So, there is somewhat of an upside to selling subscriptions now that I look back on it, and I decided that I would give it one more shot. Just don't hit me in the mouth with a Buick for trying, okay?
Why should you support the Daily Kos community by purchasing a lifetime subscription?
Seriously now, let me tell you my personal story, and then you can decide.
On March 3, 2007, my dear daughter, Alicia, was murdered.
She and her boyfriend were killed by a subhuman released from jail for a previous sadistic act of domestic violence against her.
A judge released this animal on an "own recognizance bond" after he spent several months in jail awaiting trial. The Prosecuting Attorney charged him with the lower crime of assault because Karl Rove and a bunch of christian (small c) yahoos passed the DOMA law. Because Alicia and this idiot were not married prior to her breaking up with him, the attack did not meet the new standards of domestic violence. Under a charge of Domestic Violence, stricter guidelines are in effect.
My online friends in Daily Kos Community (capital C) immediately sprang into action, not only by giving me solace, but also by submitting the following diaries.
Remembering Alicia: How DOMA Kills Women In "Separate But Equal" Domestic Violence System by Patriot Daily News Clearinghouse
Remembering Alicia: How Sexism Kills Women, a collective diary by nonnie9999, Patriot Daily, Got a Grip, melvin, Rippen Kitten, pico, mikk0 and srkp23.
Remembering Alicia: Domestic Violence Comes Home by Got a Grip.
Kossacks contributed hundreds of comments to these heartfelt diaries, but that's not all.
Many donated thousands of dollars to a fund for Alicia's four children. We did not ask for this, but the checks and Pay Pal donations rolled in. For this, my family and I are eternally grateful. I am also indebted to pico, who took the time to come to our home to console me during this most difficult period of my life.
That's what this community did for us.
You can be a special part of the Daily Kos Community for life for $100.
A little financial pain; a huge gain.

Jeez, I feel like I'm selling magazines again. The big difference is, I am selling subscriptions to my comrades in a much nicer neighborhood.
You can buy a subscription for yourself or a friend on the subscription page. If you would like to make a donation to the site, you can do so on the donations page.
... and thank you whoever gifted me a lifetime subscription. I received the email as I was writing this.
Peace be upon you,
