As I was driving on Rt. 1 today, I noticed a sign just before I crossed the Delaware River to enter Trenton, NJ. The sign can be seen at the following link:
Faithful Republican. Unfaithful husband.
Now, this is a fairly explanatory ad, but I want to draw your attention to the sponsor. One might think this would be the product of a Democratic PAC or perhaps more likely a Republican opponent PAC of old Newtie. But no, the source of this hilarious ad is much more appropriate: it's www.AshleyMadison.com
The ad went up very recently, sometime in the past week. Now I hope most of you have no idea what AshleyMadison.com is, but to give you an idea, it's best that you switch your Firefox to "Private Browsing" if you are happily married before you visit the site. If it's too late, you can just erase your recent history :)
For those who just want to know, AshleyMadison.com is a dating site for people who are already in relationships, AKA slimeball cheaters like Newt. It claims to have 12 million members in 17 countries, so at least the doughboy isn't totally alone!
Anyway, the real irony is that this ad is not supposed to be an attack ad at all. In fact, according to the Trentonian article about the billboard, it is actually PRO-Newt. Jeff Edelstein quotes AshleyMadison.com CEO Noel Biderman as saying, "I am pro-Newt. Big time." and also invoking FDR and JFK to make the point that a Gingrich presidency would have a transformational effect on society greater than these great presidents: "And if Gingrich is elected — more so than FDR, or JFK, or Clinton — we’d finally have to acknowledge that just because you have personal issues doesn’t mean you’re not capable of doing a million other things well."
Something tells me that despite his good intentions, Gingrich aides are eager to keep this ad local. Very local. Spread the word, if not to help old Newtie out, to at least give your friends a good laugh!
