We're on the last page of the old 2011 calendar at our house and my husband made the comment that it'll be 2012 "before we know it".  Most years that revelation would be met with mild bemusement but this year it was met with a grimace.

2012...a presidential election year.

Another year of robo calls and hyperbole about politicians wanting to choke the life of hard working Americans with higher taxes on the rich.  More radio and TV and internet and print advertisements meant to instill fear and loathing and disgust into the electorate to the point that we would gladly vote for Hitler just to stop the oppresive barrage of negative advertising.

And beyond campaigns, we'll have the media parrot choir cawing about how So and so looks so presidential and how you'd really like to have a beer with So and so and completely ignoring everything the candidates actually say or what record they're CLAIMING to run on.  This is not Miss/Mister USA.  This is not about crowning the next beauty king/queen of this nation's corn festival.  We need to select someone to run one of 3 branches of the federal government, not to mention the various elections accross the nation to re-establish the house of representatives and 1/3 of the Senate.
This is, to quote Joe Biden, a Big Fucking Deal, but the media treats it like the next season of "American Idol".

The only saving grace is that we don't have a primary on the Dem side for president.  Whether you like, love, or loathe Obama, we are pretty much stuck with him and he is almost guaranteed to be better than whatever foaming pile the republicans put up.  There will be no pie fights or walkouts or "strikes" or PUMA-parties on dailykos about who is awesome-sauce and who is going to save our nation from theocrats who want to destroy our economy so they can feel better about themselves.

So as we gird ourselves for the new year, let's take a moment and remember that we are all in this together.  The advertising, the media stupidity, the projections of greatness, the declarations of incompetence, we're all going to have to endure this together.

So...let's try and have some fun shall we?  IF such a thing is possible.

(And for the record, no I would not vote for Hitler, even under duress.)

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

  •  And here I thought (8+ / 0-)

you were officially starting the DK Countdown to the Apocalypse!

Just read an article entitled "Ron Paul No Racist" from the head of the NAACP up in Austin that pretty much lays to rest any concerns by calling them all "misconstrued." Pretty much started the Apocalypse clock for me! (I think the author is really Herman Cain in a cheap mustache disguise.)

This election will once again be good times ... already former pastor Rev. Wright has been trotted onto the Wingnut stage. Yippee!

IMVHO. A self absorbed, self aggrandizing, shallow, evil man who has done more to create the current toxic, counterproductive political environment than nearly anyone. (Although Dick Armey and Carl Rove have added their venom to the mix.) May the people wise up, rise up, and puke the whole rotten mess on them.

  •  2012... (5+ / 0-)

..Things I look forward to in 2012:

    1) Once spring arrives, OWS will be back stronger than ever.

    2) OWS will disrupt both the Republican & Democratic national conventions.  When this happens, hope & pray our Fascist police brigades do not receive the green light to shoot OWS protesters with real bullets.

    3) OWS protests aside, the Republican national covention is going to sound like a KKK rally.  Vehement hatred for Barack Obama notwithstanding, conspiracy theories & racial paranoia will drive the RNC.  Perhaps the gods will smile on us & we'll get a brokered convention.

    4) Barring direct intervention from space aliens, in Nov. of 2012, Barack Obama will be re-elected president of the U.S.

    5) 2012 will be a bad year for Fixed News & right wing hate radio.  The GOP nominee for president (no matter who it is) is going to be corrupt,  incompetent & mean as a kicked rattle snake.  Fixed News will be pressed to conduct an inordinate amount of right wing rehab for this ridiculous individual.

Boss Limbaugh is going to be forced to defend an utter fool.  No amount of hateful lies aimed at Barack Obama is going to lessen Boss's hapless chore.

    6) Unless space aliens interfere, the rouges' gallery of lunatics in the House of Representatives are going to be kicked to the street.

I don't care how bad the American people ignore the antics of their government officials:  These idiots are about as popular as the aforementioned rattle snake.

I could go on, but just realize 2012 is going to be an  uproarious year.

When Fascism comes to America it will be wrapped in excess body fat and carrying a misspelled sign.

  •  2012 will be an interesting year. (4+ / 0-)

I think that President Obama will win in a tough challenge, but the Democrats will win the House. I am also looking forward to saying Senator Elizabeth Warren.

  •  Am I the only one really looking forward to 2012? (0+ / 0-)

Sure, there's plenty that needs to be fixed. Lotsa stuff can be improved if we just keep after it. '11 sorta wore me down, so I'm excited about getting a fresh start.

Some may brace themselves out of necessity, others are poised to spring. I am hopeful that we will all find our own ways to contribute as much as we are able, and to support each other when we need to do that.

The past year has been hard for many. In some ways the coming year may be more difficult still. We made serious progress in '11 on several fronts. Changing direction always takes a lot of effort.

When we are approaching the end of 2012 I hope we will all feel like a running back who "left it all on the field." We will have more wins than losses this year, but we don't need to pretend there won't be struggles also.

Where we can build on improvements started already we have to keep pushing. New opportunities will be available, too. Rather than be content disrupting the status quo, we can help others see what the future can bring.
