It's my favorite time of the year, when music blogs compile their countdown lists. This was a great year for new music of all kinds, and to narrow down my focus a bit I'm going to post a few of my favorite songs of the year that have a bit of a fun or retro feel to them. Please join in and share your favorite songs of the year, whether they're old or new.

A lot of music this year had a retro, happy feel. The cheerful co-dependence of Baby Drugs by Tristen makes me smile every time I watch it:
If you also like a retro sound check out The Cults, from the creepy-upbeat Abducted to the childlike winsomness of Go Outside to the dreamy slow-dance feeling of You Know What I Mean.
Who doesn't like good sax? Yourstru.ly's version of Washed Out's Far Away should take you back in time:
Another mood-evoking and outstanding sub-pop tune by Washed Out: Amor Fati
Girls put out the (repulsively named) Vomit, a song that builds slowly to a full rock, gospel-backed cry for love to "Come into my heart."
Also worth a listen by Girls, the sunshiny San Francisco hippy song Honey Bunny.
Ok, so I don't bust everyone's bandwidth (and there are so many more great songs this year), just one more music video, but then you can post as many as you like in the comments. In keeping with the upbeat theme ( and I need this given that I've got a touch of the S.A.D. even here in sunny northern California), the infectiously catchy Satellites by Catcall:
This one's for Meteor Blades:
To avoid what my young friend calls "The Dreaded Musical Ossification" I listen to various music blogs while surfing the GOS, including:
RCRD LBL (free legal downloads)
Better Propaganda (free legal downloads)
KEXP 90.3 FM (free legal downloads)
The Hype Machine (music blog aggregater)
Music is Art (stunning visuals)
Music for Kids Who Can't Read Good
We All Want Someone to Shout For
Radio Paradise (internet radio)

from Angie in WA State:
in this hi-larious, as usual, diary by JeffLieber, What It Must Feel Like Trying To Order At The Republican Deli I salute Dartagnan for writing what may be the very best pun to ever grace the pages of the Daily Kos:
Sometimes life just hands you a Mitt Sandwich. |
from Dragon5616:
hannah nails the real reason for GOP-led Voter ID laws in Meteor Blades' excellent post Heritage fellow: Eric Holder's intervention over S.C. voter ID law driven by 'racial paranoia'.
from poligirl:
LaEscapee had a lovely commentary on voting, noting it doesn't end with casting your ballot:
But your responsibility doesn't end there. The trick is that if you really do care about those issues you have decided were important in your decision making process, your responsibility is to do all you can to ensure that the person you supported actually act on them in a positive manner. |
from maggiejean:
from one of my favorite commenters, JekyllnHyde: What Fox News Does Best. Actually the entire thread is fun to read in News Corpse's diary Fox News Ratings Fall Off a Cliff.
from smileycreek on behalf of Mikecan1978,
who named LABobsterofAnaheim's thoughts on "for better and definitely for worse, our current president is very much in line with past Democratic presidents"comment.
also, too:
In David Atkins' (thereisnospoon) Why Libertarianism Doesn't Work Vicky notes that Libertarianism and communism are two extremes that cannot and will not be healthy and concludes with a Brian Tracey quote:
All extremes have one thing in common. They are rooted in stupidity. |
