Today, President Obama has signed the Defense Authorization Bill with a signing statement regarding indefinite detention. I found this in a ThinkProgress article which quotes President Obama in a National Journal Article:
“I have signed this bill despite having serious reservations with certain provisions that regulate the detention, interrogation, and prosecution of suspected terrorists,” Obama said in a statement accompanying his signature.
Also,
The AP has more from the signing statement: “My administration will not authorize the indefinite military detention without trial of American citizens. Indeed, I believe that doing so would break with our most important traditions and values as a nation.”
You can read the whole thing here.
This is the reason why I am still "committed" to supporting President Obama in the coming election. Signing the bill and enforcing the indefinite detention of American citizens are two different things. Perhaps President Obama knows what he is doing after all. Does anyone else remember how President Bush used signing statements during his two terms?
In order to remedy the codification of indefinite detentions, we will need to see a new version of the Due Process Guarantee Act of 2011 put up for debate in Congress next year.
So, who else here is "uncommitted?"
