Hey everyone, welcome to the first of what will (hopefully) be many editions of my daily Hai-Kos. Introductions and explanations below the fold.
A Little About Me
I'm a 28-year-old guy currently living in Portland Oregon, hence the username. I grew up on a small sheep ranch in Eastern Oregon. Put in 13 years of public school, then four more at a Catholic university in the Midwest (as did both my older sister and my younger brother). After school I moved back to Oregon, and I've lived in Portland for the past five years. I married my beautiful wife in July of 2010.
How This Came About
I joined DK around May of 2009, mostly out of curiosity. I attended a rally for John Kerry in 2004, and one for our current President in early 2008, but that was the extent of my political engagement, apart from voting. On Kos, I had the same level of involvement; mostly a lurker, very rarely would I post a diary or comment on something, but I would vote in polls that I found entertaining.
On November 1, 2010, I was laid off from my job, and for the past 3 months I've been looking for something new, but with no success. Around the same time, one of my dad's friends and my sister started posting their status updates on Facebook in the form of (Americanized) haiku. For some reason, I took to it too.
What I Hope To Do With This Series
Since I'm no good at New Year's resolutions, this will be my Tet resolution. I'll try to publish a diary every school night (my wife is a schoolteacher) with a few haiku that summarize my thoughts and feelings of the day, either news commentary or personal experiences. Some days there will be more, some days there will be less, some haiku will be titled and some will not, but I'll try to get at least one good haiku up every evening. One of the beautiful things about the art form is its concision, the ability to say much with little. Since I'm not a very good writer, this might be why haiku appeal to me so much.
So without further ado...
