I hope this diary helps someone.
Several months ago I thought about how I could earn some extra money.
While out to dinner, my date told me a story about how she had a masters degree in mathematics, but had been laid off and was having a hard time finding work.
Then on our next date, she told me she was advertising her services as a math tutor, and that she had already made some money.
Now; I play the guitar, and the bass, but haven't received any formal training whatsoever, so I was unsure if I should even try.
Here is what happened next, over the jump!
I decided to advertise my services as a guitar and bass teacher, making no claims to having any training or degrees, but rightly listing my accomplishments and experience, along with a link in my ads to my youtube videos.
Well, at first nothing happened.
Then, one day, after thinking that the chances of getting students in this economy was hopeless, the phone rang.
It was a man interested in getting bass lessons.
The next Saturday, he came to my home, and an hour later, I'd made enough money to buy groceries for nearly a week.
Now, after placing daily ads in all the usuall places, CL, Backpage, and local online free classifieds, I have a student everyday after work, and several on the weekends.
Fortunaltely, I have a full time job, so I don't rely on this money to make ends meet, but I'm very thankfull that I have a new career that I can do for the rest of my able life, and in addition, I have a goal to build up my student base to the point of actually leaving my day job.
I love teaching! It's the most wonderful thing that's come into my life lately and I wanted to share it with Kossacks in case my story can help even one person out there find some work and make some money!
If you would like some advice, or some more details about this type of work, feel free to ask, if I am online, I will gladly answer your questions.
The point of this diary is hopefully to inspire anyone out there with ANY teachable skill, to just go ahead and let the world know that you are available to teach.
Ask for a respectable hourly rate, don't sell yourself short.
Remember, if you ask for $10 an hour, you won't get $40, you can always counter with a lower rate if you feel you need to.
