Democratic women presented the Mount Olive Feeding Ministry with a $2000 check to feed the hungry
The Northshore Democratic Women's Club of St. Tammany, Washington and Tangipahoa Parishes is known for its hard work fighting for Democratic ideals and candidates, but what these women accomplished this holiday season has nothing to do with politics. The women decided to create their very own homemade Louisiana cookbook, called the Cookbook for the Hungry, to sell to help feed those in need in their community. The ladies dubbed the cookbook "A wickedly delicious collection of recipes and cooking tips, spiced with political wit, served up by Louisiana Democrats." Their efforts so far this holiday season have already resulted in raising $2000 which they donated to the Mt. Olive Feeding Ministry in Slidell, LA.
"I want to congratulate these great Democratic women for deciding they wanted to do something to help their community and then coming up with a fantastic way to make a big difference in people's lives," said Louisiana Democratic Party Chairman Buddy Leach. "They created a wonderful cookbook with all proceeds going to help feed those in need in the Northshore area and I applaud their great work helping their fellow Louisianans. These women truly epitomize what it means to be a Democrat-- fighting for the less fortunate and those struggling during tough times. I thank them for their good work and hope their actions inspire other clubs, both Democrat and Republican, to take on similar projects to help those in need."
One of the cookbook's authors, Ann Porter of Slidell, explained that after the women's club sponsored a forum on hunger in St. Tammany Parish, club members brainstormed about what they could do to help alleviate the problem. The result was the Cookbook for the Hungry. She noted that this isn't an ordinary community cookbook. It was designed by professional book designer Tina Henderson of Lacombe, edited by humor writer Liz Scott Monaghan of Folsom and includes good-natured political pot shots as well as recipes from the club's skilled cooks. It also includes directions on planting a vegetable garden, filleting a fish, and a few tips on healthful eating.
The Mount Olive Feeding Ministry, founded in 1986, currently serves and delivers 350 meals each day, six days per week, totaling nearly 90,000 meals a year.
