Once upon a time a homophobic and misogynistic man read, or, at least was quoted, a study by the Brookings Institute.
This man fervently believed in the "sanctity of marriage" and really, really believed that sex was only for making babies. he believed that gay people were second class citizens, and that the rights of all straight people did not apply to them. He also thought that blah people only wanted to live on welfare. Oh, and he thought that blah people had no work ethic. Wait. No. I'm getting confused. That was another man. But it is fair to say that it was also Mr. Santorum.
Any ways, back to our story.
So when this poor deluded, and not all that bright man heard the three things, three magical things that people must do to begin the American dream and really start off right, well, he was over the Moon.
And no, this story doesn't involve exiting out the back of a large old wardrobe into a magical world where you can be kings and queens, even though you are children. And it is not about Mormons either.
That picture is just a metaphor for suspending your disbelief. It is a story-time thing.
Just trust me.
Are you ready for the Magical Three Things?
Here we go.
The first thing is to work. Now, we know that liberals and blah people hate this one. Gays too.
The second was to go to school. Phew. Not for us, right?
The third is to get married. And if you are a woman, to get married before you have your first child. Especially if you are blah.
Revelation! I for one am super glad that Rick Santorum is around to tell us that if you do these three things you will be ahead financially, and will make much more money, significantly more than if you don't do them.
Um.
Just one thing.
Why is Rick Santorum willing to punish gay people by not letting them in on the third thing?
Is he willing to let all that American Dreaming, the entrepreneurship, the fabulous wedding budgets (or just moderate ones), all that economic stimulus, not to mention good old American values, just let it go to waste?
Isn't it better, oh wise Mr. Santorum, to have gay people living the dream right beside the majority?
/snark
Mr. Santorum's ideas on what makes America great and what makes it tick like a well oiled clock are in direct conflict with his own statements on gays.
If getting married is good for a person's economical health, then lets all of us who want to be married, marry.
If getting a higher education works, then lets work to make it affordable for more people.
If working is a priority, then lets invest in new tech so the students will have a job when they finish school. Lets put the power of the government to work on building infrastructure and green jobs, and on making college an attainable goal, so that jobs of all kinds will be fed with new and refreshed workers who are ready to face the challenges of a new century. We need all of the answers that can work. To work.
