Nick has twice before represented Texas in Congress.  He was among those who suffered in Delay's mid-decade redistricting, came back to win in TX-22 in 2006 when Delay was forced to resign, but could not hold the seat in 2008.   He is running again, this time in Texas-14.

Full disclosure.  I consider Nick a friend, even though I am far more progressive than he is on many issues.  He is a strong supporter of public education -  he was a biology teacher before he first ran for public office, his wife has taught special ed and as I recall his daughter is a teacher.

According to Joel Coon, his campaign manager,  "Right now he leads all comers on the GOP side and has no Democratic opponent in the primary. His name recognition is a minimum of 40 points higher than his nearest competitor and his favorability is a minimum of 2:1. All of these things point to Nick having a very strong shot at taking this seat back."   But he will need money for the general - there will be a Republican opponent, and support from DCCC is essential.

The DCCC is making its next cut based on contributors as of tonight.  Candidates need to reach a minimum of 100 contributors.  If you can give even a nominal amount, it can help make a difference.  I have given the Netroots indicator of $20.12.   The amount is less important than the number of contributors.

Nick is a good guy.  I personally vouch for him.  You will not always agree with him - heck, I don't.  But he is as honest as they come.  You can read a bit more about him and his campaign here.

Thanks in advance for anything you can do.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

I would've contributed more if it was in my account.

I live in a red, red, RED district in Indiana -- "Taliban" Dan Burton's district -- and I LOVE hearing about situations like this.  I always adopt some Democrats around the country so that I can contribute to them.  We often don't even have a Democrat running against the GOP.

I had no idea that the criteria for the DCCC was 100 contributors in order to back them.

If this isn't getting attention I would suggest you write another diary and make the title stronger.  TX-14: Nick Lampson -- turn it red to blue with 100 contributors tonight!

If you have the time say a little bit about his beliefs or how it might change the district.  I think all we need is to turn 25 House seats from red to blue to have a Democratic House (that's assuming Dems don't lose any).  I know the DCCC is going after 60 seats.

Districts like this are so important, teacherken.  What if 1 million people contributed $5 each to a campaign like this -- it would make a huge difference.  Or even if they just contributed $1! And in this case, if 100 people contributed $5 it will make a big difference.

Thanks for the alert about this.

so I decided to throw up something.

Just checked with campaign and they are getting close toi the 100 -  maybe another half dozen or so from right now could make a difference.

      •  I thought you were busy -- I see your diaries alot (0+ / 0-)

and I'm very glad to hear they are close to 100.  Even if not, there might be more opportunities for DCCC to back him down the road if he begins picking up support.

  •  One concern (0+ / 0-)

While doing something totally unrelated, I happened upon the No-Label website (Mark McKinnon's) and there was Nick's photo.
As a TX, but not in Houston, trying to determine his positions on Dem issues isn't easy.
Does his voting record reflect a Blue-Dog or a moderate Dem?

    •  depends on issues (0+ / 0-)

he was a member of the Blue Dog caucus his last time in Congress, but he did not consistently vote with other members of that caucus

he was also in a very conservative district, one which a progressive would have had no chance of winning.
