Thursday night the Republican Monkey show gathered at the Charleston Coliseum to fling their feces at each other. Democrat$ watched the fracas serenely at a fundraiser in Mt Privilege.
Meanwhile, Occupy Charleston was crashing the party. Outside AND inside.
We had help : brothers and sisters from Occupy New Hampshire, Occupy Wall Street, Occupy Columbia, Occupy Myrtle Beach and others. Earlier in the day, we'd managed to provoke Mitt Romney and invite ourselves to Newt's bbq. Some of us were ejected, but overall, we were able to get through more often than not.
Thursday night was a particularly dramatic scene. The N. Charleston police sought to confine us (and other dissenters) to 'free speech zones' at the Coliseum exits, a quarter mile from the candidates. But free speech cannot be confined to a zone. Banner before us, we made our way up the hill to the very doors of the Coliseum and there we delivered our message, loudly and boldly. And that message is that it's time to burst the political bubble.
Politicians believe that their weighty responsibilities grant them a license to exercise lofty power based on the dictates of ancient religions, wealthy businesses and twisted social theories. Not only must they be made to understand that the only legitimate use of power is on behalf of the people whom they serve, but they must understand that they will eventually be held accountable for their misuse of the public trust.
We are Occupy.
