I recently started delving into the "backstory" of the products I buy, and am attempting to get at the root mega corporation that makes each product. For example, before I became more ecologically conscious and switched to Seventh Generation, I used to use Northern toilet paper, or "tissue" as it's so quaintly called. I now find that Northern is a subsidiary of the Koch Brothers, and as such, I was lining their pockets for their political heresy.
I also started wondering about all the commercials I see on television. I always see the
ones that state "S.C. Johnson, a family company", but is it really? Who is that family beholden to?
I get emails very frequently from Credo, urging me to change my cell phone service. Now I will say that Credo does wonderful work in terms of political activism, but I learned at the last Netroots Nation convention that Credo uses Sprint as its mobile carrier. I already have Sprint service; do I need to switch?
Some ads are transparent; AARP claims to work for seniors, and many times it does, but it's evident that they exist to sell their insurance, and as such are a part of the health insurance lobby.
I suppose what I'm asking is for help in digging deeper to find the roots of the products and services I use. I'm looking for Kossacks who have knowledge, websites, blogs or whatever services I can use to help avoid the corporations that I know are anathema to the political and environmental beliefs I hold. I admit that I'm a novice at how to go about it.
